Things Undone

Every now and then my mind wanders to a really dark place, and in that place we all find the list… the list of things we wish we had done. Therein we find the list of apologies that we never got around to, the list of letters we wish we had written. We’ll read the list of the things we wish we had tried and certainly the things we wish we had never tried.

When I was very young, I dreamed I would write and create stories that would capture the imagination of myriad readers. I wrote all sorts of stories from the time I was in 5th grade through 8th grade. When I was in 8th grade, however, I did something bold and brash. I shared. I wrote a story and had it published in the school newspaper. It was serialized for several issues.. and then I stopped working on it. At that point in time, another student in my journalism class decided to “fill in” and take over my serialized story. My big mistake at that ripe old age of 12 was using real names. I used my name. I used the names of my friends. I used this story as a vehicle to try to be cool. When I gave up control of the story, my classmate decided to mock me, and turned me into a buffoonish character. Maybe I had it coming, maybe I didn’t. I was a target for him, and I allowed it to happen.

Maybe that was the experience that caused me to set aside a dream.

The Career Trainer (update)

This past April, I recertified as a Microsoft Certified Trainer.  I first became an MCT in August of 2015,  which means at the end of this current cycle, I’ll be approaching 20 years.

In the recent past, I came across an old friend at a Microsoft trade show, and she told me that she thinks I’m the longest continuously active MCT that she knew of. Any number of MCT’s depart from the industry for a peiord of time and return, and others take jobs in the industry in consulting or management roles, most with tremendous success. I have wondered at times if I’m stuck in some sort of rut or if I should leave my current position and pursue some loftier goal.

The reality is – I really like being a trainer. I like learning and passing on what I’ve learned to my peers in the industry.  I’m not going to blow smoke at anybody and pass myself off as something that I’m not, trying to convince someone that I’m the be all-end all of information knowledge. I simply want to be a resource for learning.

The time may one day come for me to look at other areas in IT, and I might even fill out that MVP application one day and see if that garners me a little more recognition. In the meantime, I’m content to train, help people with the problems that pop up in their IT environments, and crack a few jokes on the way.

Getting Back on Track

Recently I read a “challenge” for writing from an author I started to follow. The challenge is pretty simple – write at least 100 words per day on one’s blog, so I’m give it a shot. Stop and think about it for a second – 100 words really isn’t that much. It’s merely a matter of opening up one’s mind and letting the words flow onto the page.  I always liked the word ‘flow’..Maintaining balanced diet is a natural remedial measure to alleviate weight gain problems, never hesitate to make use cialis tadalafil 50mg of Power Khan: Take one bottle per day any time. viagra online in uk He has a long list of accreditations for his work. I need to be more fluid and more expressive, and allow that expression to become visible on the written page.

Waiting on the Books

As a “bookish” sort of person, I am today a bit frustrated at the lack of non-Microsoft reference materials on two of my areas, Exchange 2013 and Lync 2013. I did check Amazon to see when titles will be available, but it looks like my wait will be protracted for a few more months until some new titles become available (David Elfassy… you are at the center of my sights!).

Years ago, the books on a new release seemed to hit the bookshelves within weeks of a new product, and although there are a couple of books available on Exchange 2013, I need a little more. I love certain books, and look forward to those same authors releasing new titles (what I would do right now for an Exchange 2013 Best Practices book covering Single Item Recovery and In Place Hold right now – Siggy and Joel, I’m talking to you!).

Granted, there are numerous blogs out there, by many very accomplished Microsoft MVP, but there’s something about having that reference in my hands. I guess today I should spend more time looking through those blogs, and putting together my own concordance of where to find specific subjects being addressed by the experts, Microsoft’s MVP’s.

Proud, pleased and pained

First off, I want to give credit where credit is due. In my household, with three active kids and two parents that work full-time, it’s often difficult to find time to focus on health and fitness. My beautiful and brilliant spouse has joined a gym with my daughters and they are committing to exercising regularly with each other throughout the summer. I think this is fantastic. In the past there have been exercise equipment in various parts of the house, as well as Wii Fit and Dance Dance Revolution fits and sputters, but exercising as a family hasn’t always been practical. I’m very proud of the initiative they’ve taken, and I’m sure at some point they’ll remind me that I have become a spud.

Second point – I’m falling in love with my Microsoft Surface Pro. I was a bit of a cynic when Microsoft came out with the Surface, as well as bit non-committal when it came to Windows 8. I did a bit of looking around into other touch-screen offerings, but really didn’t think that the Surface was going to be the best fit for me. I looked at Dell, HP, Toshiba, IBM and ASUS, but never pulled the trigger.  At Microsoft’s TechEd Conference this past week, I pulled the trigger, and I can’t say I have any regrets. I love this unit. I didn’t get the version that came with the Touch or Type Keyboard Cover, but I did pick up a little Bluetooth keyboard that I adore, and it connected to the Surface flawlessly. The additional advantage is that I can use this little keyboard anywhere. I like the idea of the touch/type covers, but I like to have the Surfaced sitting a little further back to accommodate my vision issues.

Last thing. I have to make some improvements. Right now I feel that I’ve got to make some changes to becomes better at just being me – being a better trainer, a better husband, a better father… just some overall general improvements. At the core of these changes is the need to get healthy. Today, I’m not as healthy as a should be. I felt it in my feet working the floor at TechEd, and I feel it when I do just about anything. I’m overweight, and my endurance is awful – getting too tired too easy. I need to make the necessary changes – my wife, my kids, my students, friends, peers deserve the best me that I can be, and I’m not there right now. I don’t know if anybody other than me is ever going to read this, but just making that admission should help me get into the right mind set to affect some changes.

Time to get to work!

Rejuventated and Refreshed

One of the things every Microsoft Certified Trainer should do is make the annual trip to Microsoft’s Technical Education Conference. Every year there are new things to meet and discuss, whether it’s the annual rehash over what certification exams we love/hate, or the unveiling of the new products and services that Microsoft is releasing into the wild.

The other key thing (for me, at least) is the opportunity to meet the people that work behind the scenes at Microsoft Learning and give ’em the old compliment sandwich. For those unfamiliar with the compliment sandwich, the bread is comprised of “the things you’re doing right”. You open with the “Hey, loved what you guys did with this one thing” and you close with the “Hey, all in all, there’s things here that I think are really cool, keep up the good work”. In the middle you’ll find the meat.

I’ve entered my 19th year as a Microsoft Certified Trainer. I’ll have little doubt about whether or not I pursue year twenty – although a random runaway bus or my death-defying commute on the K-10 highway might present an obstacle. I’m a lifer. I’ll retire an MCT, and today I can tell you there will be no regrets. Becoming a trainer was probably the wisest career move I’ve ever made.

That’s not to say that every day is a bucket of daisies. Every now and then a new challenge presents itself. Sometimes those challenges are environmental (warm room, cold room – yeah, first world problems), sometimes with the alpha version of a new class, and many times it’s just me failing to pay attention to this, that or the other thing. One thing I will say, is that it’s very rarely if ever the staff here at Centriq Training in Leawood, Kansas. I am truly blessed to work at this training center. I receive ample prep time, and they let me pursue other opportunities with their blessing (technical editing opportunities, a little side gig with TrainSignal, some consulting).

Even with all of the good things that I’ve got going on, it’s still important for me to get to TechEd and recharge the batteries. Today, I’m taking that energy and choosing to focus on being the best trainer I can be. I am going to maintain this blog and provide folks with tips and tricks on various topics. I am going to get you some links to news I think you ought to be aware of, and I’m going to get it out there as quickly as I can.

I’m also going to tell you about stuff I think is cool. Right now I’m writing this blog entry on a Microsoft Surface Pro with a Microsoft Sculpt Mobile Keyboard, attached via Bluetooth. I like it!

Blogging with a purpose…

…or two. I want to share the things I’ve discovered for my students as well as my peers in the Microsoft Certified Trainer community, and I do have a couple of specific goals, both personal and professional. I enjoy the contact, so feel free to post your comments, and one day I hope to count myself among my peers that earned MVP status with Microsoft. I know that being named an MVP is earned, not merely given, so I’m going to do my best to aggregate solid contact for Windows Client and Server, as well as my Unified Communication interests in Exchange and Lync.

From time to time, I’ll try to post something humorous or insightful, and hopefully it won’t bore y’all too much.

Thanks!
