Proud, pleased and pained

First off, I want to give credit where credit is due. In my household, with three active kids and two parents that work full-time, it’s often difficult to find time to focus on health and fitness. My beautiful and brilliant spouse has joined a gym with my daughters and they are committing to exercising regularly with each other throughout the summer. I think this is fantastic. In the past there have been exercise equipment in various parts of the house, as well as Wii Fit and Dance Dance Revolution fits and sputters, but exercising as a family hasn’t always been practical. I’m very proud of the initiative they’ve taken, and I’m sure at some point they’ll remind me that I have become a spud.

Second point – I’m falling in love with my Microsoft Surface Pro. I was a bit of a cynic when Microsoft came out with the Surface, as well as bit non-committal when it came to Windows 8. I did a bit of looking around into other touch-screen offerings, but really didn’t think that the Surface was going to be the best fit for me. I looked at Dell, HP, Toshiba, IBM and ASUS, but never pulled the trigger.  At Microsoft’s TechEd Conference this past week, I pulled the trigger, and I can’t say I have any regrets. I love this unit. I didn’t get the version that came with the Touch or Type Keyboard Cover, but I did pick up a little Bluetooth keyboard that I adore, and it connected to the Surface flawlessly. The additional advantage is that I can use this little keyboard anywhere. I like the idea of the touch/type covers, but I like to have the Surfaced sitting a little further back to accommodate my vision issues.

Last thing. I have to make some improvements. Right now I feel that I’ve got to make some changes to becomes better at just being me – being a better trainer, a better husband, a better father… just some overall general improvements. At the core of these changes is the need to get healthy. Today, I’m not as healthy as a should be. I felt it in my feet working the floor at TechEd, and I feel it when I do just about anything. I’m overweight, and my endurance is awful – getting too tired too easy. I need to make the necessary changes – my wife, my kids, my students, friends, peers deserve the best me that I can be, and I’m not there right now. I don’t know if anybody other than me is ever going to read this, but just making that admission should help me get into the right mind set to affect some changes.

Time to get to work!
